This was an absolute joy to put together. My grandfather inspired it a couple years after he passed away, leaving me a whole bunch of letters he wrote home while serving in the Italian campaign. They told wonderful stories.
    I came to my editor at the time with an idea: see if we can track down others with similar stories contained in so many yellowing stacks. It paid off. What you see below is the first in the eight-part series, my favorite selection.
